2021 Jeep Cherokee Reviews SummaryThe KL-generation Cherokee launched as a 2014 model and almost immediately began swirling in controversy. Jeep hadn’t offered a Cherokee in the United States since the 2001 model year, when the XJ Cherokee disappeared, replaced by two generations of the Jeep Liberty. There was great excitement for this all-new Jeep. Lots of fans were hoping for a redo of the 1984 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee that really helped to define the midsize SUV class with a unibody and legendary toughness. “The 2014 Cherokee feels planted on the road, more carlike than trucklike…” read an early review in Car and Driver. A separate review from the same publication read: “If you have eyes, you’ve noticed that this Cherokee, code-named KL, makes no design references, other than with the grille, to the iconic, rectilinear XJ Cherokee.” But the automotive industry isn’t necessarily in the business of fueling nostalgia. It’s interested in what it can sell in great numbers in the future, not what people liked 30 years ago. And what we’ve realized over the years is that the Cherokee is really good at what it does, and it’s capable of doing a lot more than you’d expect. Jeep sells these at a rate of 240,000 annually, in a good year. The best the Jeep Liberty it replaced ever managed was 166,883 units before dropping off the face of the Earth entirely. Clearly, Jeep knew something we didn’t when it released the Cherokee. | |

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee's styling had evolved since its debut, with opinions softening over time. Initially, the short grille and swept-back headlights were points of contention, but after seven years, the Cherokee's proportions seemed more balanced. The exterior appearance varied significantly with trim levels, from the basic Latitude with 17-inch wheels to the more refined 80th Anniversary Edition with 19-inch Granite Crystal wheels and painted lower body cladding. The Cherokee's optional panoramic sunroof was a standout feature, covering the entire top surface. Despite being part of a crowded crossover SUV market, the Cherokee managed to stand out, bearing a resemblance to the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee, particularly from the front.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, known as the G-Wagen, had a storied history dating back to its 1979 debut. By 2021, it was available in two models in the U.S.: the G550 and the AMG G63. The G-Class was renowned for its boxy, rugged design, a classic two-box style that set it apart from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Inside, the G-Class featured a tasteful design with a 12.3-inch widescreen infotainment screen and a matching virtual instrument panel. The G-Class was a status symbol, often seen in bold custom colors and adorned with luxury features, yet it retained its rugged, off-road capabilities.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offered three engine options, starting with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower for the Latitude and Latitude Plus trims. A more powerful 3.2-liter V-6 engine delivered 271 hp, while the top-tier 2.0-liter GMET4 turbocharged four-cylinder engine produced 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Despite these options, the Cherokee's acceleration was modest, with 0 to 60 mph times around 7.2 seconds for the V6 and 7.4 seconds for the turbo-four. All models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, which improved over time. The Cherokee Trailhawk model excelled off-road, thanks to features like Jeep Active Drive Lock and Selec-Speed Crawl Control. However, the Cherokee was also available in front-wheel drive, catering to budget-conscious buyers.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, particularly the G550, was a powerhouse with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine producing 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. It featured a nine-speed automatic transmission and permanent four-wheel drive, with Dynamic Select driving programs for various terrains. The G550 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, impressive for its size. The G-Class boasted a robust suspension system, adjustable options, and three locking differentials for off-road prowess. The AMG G63 variant took performance to another level, with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. However, its fuel economy was a drawback, with ratings of 13 mpg city and 19 mpg highway for the G550.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee occupied a niche between the smaller Renegade and larger Grand Cherokee. However, it fell short in utility compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, offering only 26 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 55 cubic feet with them folded. Passenger volume was competitive at 102 cubic feet. The interior was straightforward, with trim levels influencing the quality of materials. The Latitude featured basic black plastic, while the Trailhawk offered suede seat inserts and the Latitude Lux boasted Nappa leather upholstery.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class excelled in utility, with 38.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and 68.6 cubic feet with the second row folded. It had a payload capacity of over 1,000 pounds and could tow up to 7,700 pounds. The front cabin was spacious, with ample storage and a tall roofline providing excellent headroom. The second row accommodated three adults comfortably. However, some luxury features, like ventilated front seats, were part of expensive packages. The G550's spare tire was mounted on the tailgate, adding to its distinctive styling.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee featured the Uconnect infotainment system, praised for its user-friendly interface. It offered two screen sizes: a 7-inch touchscreen for lower trims and an 8.4-inch touchscreen for higher trims. Both screens supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though only wired connections were available. The Cherokee also provided a 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration. Remote start was an option, enhancing convenience.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class impressed with its twin 12.3-inch HD screens for the instrument panel and infotainment. These screens were customizable, allowing drivers to tailor the layout and colors to their preferences. The Burmester Surround Sound system added to the immersive experience. The COMAND system, controlled via unique Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel, offered advanced functionality. The G-Class included a rear-seat entertainment system, multiple USB and 12-volt outlets, and standard WiFi. However, wireless device charging was not available.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee received mixed safety ratings. While it earned top "Good" scores in crashworthiness categories from the IIHS, it did not receive a Top Safety Pick award. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall safety rating. Standard safety features included lane departure warning, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring. However, adaptive cruise control was only available on higher trims.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offered a range of standard safety features, including a rearview camera, active lane-keeping assist, active brake assist, and adaptive cruise control. However, its size and weight posed risks to pedestrians and other vehicles. The G-Class had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA for crashworthiness.
