The 2027 Honda Passport upgrades its TrailSport trims with more off-road-ready features.
Though the Passport was redesigned for the 2026 model year, Honda has updated the two TrailSport trims with upgraded suspension and extra ground clearance for 2027. The base TrailSport trim gets the most significant upgrade with a standard surround-view camera system, a front camera washer, and a heated steering wheel. The base RTL trim carries over unchanged but is packed with tech and safety features as well as standard all-wheel drive (AWD).
Verdict: The Honda Passport is a great family vehicle with plenty of cargo space. It’s one of the few SUVs in its class with a standard V6 engine, and the refreshed TrailSport trims are now better equipped to tackle rugged terrain. While the Passport has a higher starting price than its competitors, it includes a lot of standard amenities that are options on other two-row midsize SUVs.
The 2027 Honda Passport has a handsome, upright stance with large windows and good visibility. Even in the base RTL, the overall design gives a rugged vibe. We like the distinctive daytime running lights surrounding the rectangular headlights, which are white on the RTL and amber on the TrailSport trims. The latter also add orange front recovery hooks, TrailSport badging, and all-terrain tires for real capability with the off-road looks. New for 2027, the TrailSports add amber hood-scoop lights that are more cool than functional.
Though gray cloth and leather seats are standard on the RTL, they have a premium look with the black stripe down the middle and dark reverse stitching. Unlike competitors such as the Toyota 4Runner, the dash materials don’t feel overly plasticky, but the area surrounding the gear shift, wireless phone charger, and cupholders on the RTL has some hard plastic that looks a little cheap.
Upgrading to the TrailSport trims brings better materials, including cool textured topographical map mats next to the wireless charger and inside the passenger-side dash cubby. TrailSport models also have easy-to-clean leatherette seating surfaces in the lower trim and perforated leather in the Elite. Plus the TrailSport’s all-season floor mats are great for muddy hiking shoes as well as snow boots caked with dirty slush.
The Honda Passport is one of the few midsize two-row SUVs that comes standard with a V6 engine. It delivers 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, feels very smooth in highway acceleration, and has the right amount of torque for low-speed off-road maneuvers. Interestingly, this is 5 hp and 4 lb-ft of torque less than the 2026 model, but having tested both vehicles back-to-back, we didn’t notice any lack of power.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the only other vehicles in this class that offers a standard V6, but it’s the base engine for a reason. It has more power than the Passport’s V6 but feels a little rough around the edges in comparison.
During the two-day test, we were able to drive both 2026 and 2027 TrailSport models on- and off-road. On-road, we found the differences to be minimal—both vehicles were quiet under hard acceleration and at highway speeds—but off-road, we noticed a bigger difference. Honda says more than 70% of the 2027 TrailSport's suspension has been reengineered, and it was noticeably smoother, but the extra 1.38 inches of ground clearance in the 2027 model is the bigger deal. We were able to clear more obstacles without scraping, and the fact that the TrailCam is standard on the TrailSport models for 2027 means we had better all-around visibility.
While a lot of people may poo-poo the idea of an AWD unibody SUV being a capable off-roader, we think the 2027 TrailSport proves its case. No, it doesn’t have locking differentials or low-range four-wheel drive (4WD), so the wheels stick up in the air when it hits moguls, but the Trail mode is so good that it keeps it moving through some pretty tough obstacles. Plus, with steel skid plates covering the engine and the fuel tank, it's protected even when scrapes happen. Our test vehicles had optional rock sliders, and for those who are truly planning to go off-road, this $865 accessory is well worth it.
One of the things we really like about the Honda Passport is the number of practical features strewn throughout the vehicle, and that starts with the usable front and rear cupholders in the doors that are knee height rather than awkwardly at the driver's and passenger's ankles. There’s also a nice cubby in the dash in front of the passenger that cleanly holds a cell phone or wallet.
The 2027 Passport has 44 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, and there is some underfloor storage that can be accessorized with a cargo management system in all trims or a full-size spare tire kit in the TrailSport trims that provides easy access to the tire at waist level. One of the vehicles in our caravan got a flat on the trail, showing why this is another one of those accessories we recommend for buyers genuinely heading off the beaten path.
The Passport is a five-passenger vehicle, and one of the things Honda has done to make that middle seat in the second row usable is to have a flat floor so an adult can actually sit in that seat without being in the fetal position.
There are two points of practicality that could use some improvement, though. First, the seats in the Passport are very firm and can be uncomfortable after trips that last longer than two hours. Second, because of the high ride height, we’d really like to see a hand grip on the A-pillar for easier access to the front seats and on the B-pillar for the second-row seats. The hand grip in the ceiling is awkward, so more often than not we had to ally-oop ourselves into the vehicle.
The Honda Passport may be pricey for its class, but it offers a lot of standard tech. Even the RTL comes with standard features such as a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 10.2-inch digital cluster, a power liftgate, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, four USB charging ports, tri-zone climate control, Google built-in, LED exterior lights, a rear camera washer, and seven drive modes.
TrailSport trim adds standard features such as the TrailWatch camera system, a front camera washer, a heated windshield, ambient lighting, and power-folding side mirrors. The TrailSport Elite includes a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, rain-sensing wipers, and a hands-free and walk-away-close liftgate.
We used the TrailWatch cameras a lot during our two-day trek, and when we swapped into a 2026 model, we missed them. They're high definition, do an excellent job of helping with wheel placement around difficult obstacles, and activate automatically in Trail mode. It’s also worth noting that the cameras stay on up to 15 mph, while most competitors shut off their cameras at about 8 to 10 mph. It's also possible to activate the surround-view cameras via a button on the turn-signal stalk.
One of the coolest pieces of tech is the Honda Trail Experience app (HTX). It’s free to download via the Apple App store and can also be accessed through Apple CarPlay. It shows users the likes of pitch, roll, altitude, speed, tire angle, and engine temperature in the infotainment screen, and if the driver mounts their phone to the windshield, they can record video with overlays.
Every Passport comes standard with Honda Sensing, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, road-departure mitigation, and a driver-attention monitor. Separately, other standard safety features include blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, a rear-seat reminder, and a multi-angle rearview camera. The only optional feature of note is the surround-view camera system.
Though neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had released safety ratings for the 2027 Passport at the time of writing, we have a good idea of how the 2027 model will perform based on the 2026 model's crash tests. The NHTSA gave the 2026 Passport a five-star overall safety rating, and the IIHS gave it a Top Safety Pick+ designation with Good ratings in every test.
The Passport has more standard safety tech than the Toyota 4Runner, the Subaru Outback, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It also has better safety ratings than the 4Runner and the Grand Cherokee, but the Outback also received a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS.
Those comparing the base Honda Passport RTL to the base versions of the Toyota 4Runner, the Subaru Outback, or the Jeep Grand Cherokee will probably gasp, as the Passport has a significantly higher starting price of $46,490 with destination. In fact, it costs about $10,000 more than the Outback. Gulp. Considering the standard safety tech and the high level of premium materials and features, it makes a little more sense, but it’s still a hard pill to swallow.
It’s not until the TrailSport trim that the pricing starts to make more sense. Even if buyers opt for the Outback Wilderness, when they add the options package that includes the likes of a moonroof, a surround-view camera system, a larger infotainment screen with navigation, and power-folding mirrors, the prices are within spitting distance of each other. The Wilderness rings in at $50,535 versus the TrailSport’s $51,290. Buyers considering the 4Runner who want the surround-view camera system will need the TRD Off-Road Premium trim, which starts at $58,065.
For those who don’t need bougie features such as a premium audio system, leather seats, or heated rear seats, we think the base TrailSport trim (as opposed to the TrailSport Elite) is the sweet spot for this model. With its new standard amenities and off-road capability, buyers get a lot for their money.
