Which BMW M5 trim should I buy?
The 2026 BMW M5 offers these trims:
- BMW M5 Sedan: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the core M5 formula with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, xDrive all-wheel drive, active steering, adaptive dampers, and the standard driver-assistance suite.
- BMW M5 Touring: This adds wagon body style practicality, underfloor bracing, and a small rear spoiler, making it the pick if you want the M5’s performance with more cargo-friendly versatility.
What BMW M5 do most buyers choose?
The BMW M5 years with the most listings are 2026, 2025, and 2019.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 186 | 32.8% |
| 2025 | 169 | 33.1% |
| 2019 | 147 | 29.3% |
| 2020 | 137 | 32.1% |
| 2018 | 114 | 28.1% |
| 2027 | 109 | 33.9% |
Higher-volume years tend to be the easiest places to shop because you usually get more choice in price, mileage, and equipment. They also tend to be the years buyers cross-shop most often, which helps keep the market active.
What is the BMW M5's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $114,564 | −8.33% |
| 2023 | $82,769 | −7.4% |
| 2019 | $52,294 | −7.35% |
Prices are moving lower across the model years shown, which can create better buying opportunities for used shoppers. The declines are fairly close in size, so the pattern points to broad softening rather than a sharp drop concentrated in just one year.
The 2019, 2023, and 2025 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the BMW M5 safe?
- 2026: 7/10

Should I buy a used BMW M5 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −8.33% versus a year ago, and the 2023 model is at −7.4%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.1% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2026 model has the most listings. The BMW M5 offers a rare mix of supercar pace, luxury, and everyday usability.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Under the hood is a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a plug-in hybrid system, with total system output of 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.
- Tech: The M5 has version 8.5 of the iDrive operating system, incorporating wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, YouTube video streaming, and AirConsole gaming.
- Safety: The latest model adds automated lane centering for highway driving and a Traffic Jam Assistant that facilitates hands-free driving in stop-and-go highway traffic at speeds up to 40 mph.
- Starting price: Pricing starts at $123,275 for the sedan and $125,275 for the wagon.
If you're buying used today, the 2026 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Beautiful Vehicle all the way around, with the second generation V8 BMW produced the N63TU, I only wish I had the down payment for this car right now! Only gripe I have about this particular model is the choice of leather color as I would much prefer a black or brown interior, other than BMW’s pearl white will always be my go to exterior color.

Why it stands out
The 2025 BMW M5 stands out as a plug-in hybrid performance sedan that tries to blend extreme speed with everyday usability. It is described as the most powerful BMW M5 ever, with 717 horsepower, and it also offers a calming all-electric driving experience for up to 25 miles. That combination gives it a dual personality that is unusual even in this segment, and it helps explain why it can feel both brutally quick and surprisingly versatile.
At the same time, the 2025 BMW M5 is not presented as a perfect all-rounder. The source notes that it is the heaviest M5 ever, and it also says the exhaust is too quiet for a performance vehicle while the ride is too harsh for a luxury car. Even so, its strong acceleration, impressive dynamics, and broad daily usefulness make it appealing to buyers who want a sedan that can do a bit of everything.
