Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.9/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, power, and smooth driving experience, and they also value its family-friendly design and impressive features. That lines up with the Highlander’s use case as a practical three-row crossover that aims to blend comfort, power, and useful features in an easy-to-live-with package.

There are 32.4% good and great deals in the market, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to comfort, power, and a generally dependable ownership experience, with many owners describing it as a great-value crossover SUV. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that Toyota kept the Highlander fresh with an updated V6 engine and standard safety equipment, which supports the impression of a well-sorted, confidence-inspiring vehicle.

Toyota’s standard Safety Sense suite adds another layer of reassurance, and the Highlander’s broad feature set suggests it was built to be a long-term family hauler rather than a short-term compromise. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the model’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by family-duty use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in a family SUV: signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with the basics, but the LE Plus adds tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. The SE adds retuned suspension, LED running lights, 19-inch alloys, and sporty styling, while the Limited and Limited Platinum bring more luxury and convenience features. The base trim is the one most likely to feel stripped compared with the higher grades.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 is the engine to focus on, with stronger output and an 8-speed automatic that helps the Highlander feel capable in traffic and on the highway. The base 4-cylinder is described as underpowered and unrefined for this vehicle’s size.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise with forward collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major advantage, though some convenience and parking features are reserved for higher trims.
• Infotainment: The Highlander offers an 8-inch touchscreen on the LE Plus, and the tech story also includes four USB charge ports. Higher trims can add rear-seat entertainment and a 12-speaker JBL stereo, while the top Limited Platinum is where you’ll find the rear parking sensors and 360-degree camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway with rear-wheel drive, or 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway with all-wheel drive. Real-world testing returned an average of 19 mpg.

Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited, and Limited Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but the base 4-cylinder is not the right fit if you want the Highlander to feel adequately powered. It makes sense only if price is your top priority and you are willing to accept a less satisfying engine.
• LE Plus: This is the best-value trim. It adds the features many shoppers will actually want, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate.
• XLE: This is the trim to move up to if you want more convenience and comfort, especially because keyless entry and ignition do not arrive until here.
• SE: This is the most distinctive choice if you want the sporty suspension tuning and styling upgrades. It is also the trim the expert recommends test driving before deciding.
• Limited: This is the better pick if you want a more upscale Highlander, with features like rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats, a driver memory system, an upgraded JBL sound system, and second-row captain’s chairs.
• Limited Platinum: This is the top luxury-oriented choice, adding a panoramic sunroof, front parking sensors, auto wipers, and heated steering wheel and second-row seats.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, which is a major safety advantage no matter which trim you choose.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,204 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.51% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,619, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $20,021 sits slightly below last year's $20,966.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The Highlander’s broad appeal, standard safety equipment, and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, especially for clean examples with desirable trims and good history.

If you maintain the vehicle well and keep it in accident-free condition, you should be in a better position to preserve value when it is time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander earns top overall marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, though the IIHS gave it an Acceptable rating for headlights and NHTSA rated it four-star in the frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major strength, but the headlight result and the NHTSA sub-test ratings are worth noting if safety is your top priority.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Toyota made the 2017 model year more compelling with an updated V6, a new SE trim, and standard Toyota Safety Sense.

The bottom line: The 2017 Highlander is a smart choice if you want a family-focused three-row SUV with strong owner approval, standard safety tech, and a market that has softened enough to create some buying opportunity. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can shop carefully for a clean, well-equipped example and use the current market softness to your advantage.

How does the 2017 Toyota Highlander compare to the 2017 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2017 Toyota Highlander 7.2/10 and the 2017 Honda Pilot 7.2/10.

The Highlander is the more affordable used buy here, with a higher average used price but a stronger reputation for standard safety equipment and a more comfort-focused personality. The Pilot brings more horsepower and better highway fuel economy, while the Highlander counters with a slightly better city rating and a more favorable mix of standard features for family shoppers.
