How much does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?

Prices have softened 8.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,312 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10. Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and luxurious features, and the spacious interior comes up often as a major plus. It also fits buyers who want an SUV that can handle everyday driving while still offering towing ability and off-pavement capability. With 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Owner feedback also points to comfort, performance, and a luxurious feel, while repeatedly highlighting the spacious cabin and powerful engine as reasons people stick with it. The expert review adds that reliability predictions are unimpressive and that the model’s value proposition depends more on capability and image than low ownership stress. For used buyers, that means you should expect a vehicle with strong appeal but also be careful about maintenance history and overall condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that the SUV was used hard off-road or for towing. Because this model’s appeal depends so much on capability and equipment, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing listings.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Jeep sells this SUV in Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT model series. The lineup spans from more basic versions to upscale and performance-oriented versions, and the Overland test vehicle showed how much equipment can change the feel of the truck. The base setup is the one most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about luxury touches and advanced features.
• Powertrain: Multiple engines are available, including a standard 3.6-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and an optional 5.7-liter V8 for maximum towing. The V6 is described as strong and capable, while the V8 is for buyers who need more towing muscle.
• Safety package: The optional Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package is pricey, so check carefully whether a listing has it.
• Infotainment: The Grand Cherokee Overland uses an 8.4-inch color touchscreen with Uconnect, and the system adds Siri Eyes Free and Do Not Disturb for 2016. It is easy to use, but the tech is aging and the connected services rely on a slow 3G hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The updated V6 is rated at 21 mpg combined, and a test vehicle averaged 18.7 mpg. The optional diesel V6 returned 22.9 mpg in a test, but it adds significant cost.

Which 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 5 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, and SRT.

Here's the short version:

• Laredo: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core capability and styling without paying for the higher-end luxury and tech content. It is the trim most likely to feel stripped down compared with the richer versions above it.
• Limited: This is the better-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and equipment while staying below the luxury-focused upper trims. If you want a balanced mix of features and price, this is the one to focus on first.
• Overland: This trim is the sweet spot if you want the more upscale feel that defines the Grand Cherokee at its best. The test vehicle’s 8.4-inch touchscreen, premium sound system, and available safety package show why it suits buyers who want comfort and tech.
• Summit: Choose this if you want the most luxury-oriented version of the standard lineup. It is the trim for shoppers who care most about upscale presentation and are willing to pay for it.
• SRT: This is the performance-focused choice, built for pavement and track-ready driving. It is the right pick only if you want the Grand Cherokee’s sportiest character rather than its comfort-first or off-road strengths.

The safety package is optional on some trims, so verify whether a listing includes the Advanced Technology package before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,312 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.65% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,947, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $12,947 sits slightly below last year's $14,173.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, equipment, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Listings with desirable features and clean history should be easier to move than rougher examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick nomination from IIHS because of a Marginal rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Advanced Technology package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. That package meaningfully improves the safety story, but it is optional and not every used example will have it. The Marginal IIHS result is the main caveat to keep in mind when you shop.

Should I buy a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends towing ability, off-road capability, and upscale appeal in one package.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $11,479, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $12,947 average.
• It offers broad trim and engine choice with capable, comfortable appeal.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $14,140, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $12,947 average.
• It leans harder into upscale character and off-road cachet.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price, inventory, and satisfaction, the 2016 is the sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2015 can save you money, while the 2017 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling alternative.

How does the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee compare to the 2016 Ford Explorer?

Our experts score the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6.8/10 and the 2016 Ford Explorer 6.8/10. The Jeep brings stronger off-road identity, better fuel economy, and a more distinctive upscale image. The Explorer counters with more listings and a lower average used price, which may make it easier to shop. If you care most about capability and style, the Grand Cherokee has the edge; if you want broader inventory and a lower entry price, the Explorer is worth a look.
